New hope for £42m scheme

28.04.11

Negotiations are under-way on compulsory purchase orders to allow a long awaited £42 million regeneration of Smethwick to go ahead.

The Brindley Village II scheme will involve 193 homes, shops, roads and open spaces being built on land bordered by Lewisham Road and Mafeking Road.

Sandwell Council is now negotiating compulsory purchase orders on seven parcels of land along Lewisham Road.

Managing director Mark Stapleton of contractors PxP West Midlands, said bulldozers would start on the 11-acre site later this year once the final properties were bought - 10 years after the development was first mooted.

Ward Councillor Paramjit Randhawa said: "The scheme will regenerate an area which has been blighted for many years."
