Jobs boost as warehouses get go-ahead

04.11.09 – Express & Star

Almost 200 jobs could be created in Wolverhampton after plans to build three industrial units were given the go-ahead.

The factory/warehouses will have a total floorspace of more than 6,500 square metres.

They are to be created at the corner of Bearing Drive and Steelpark Way, Wednesfield after the proposals won the backing of Wolverhampton City Council's planning committee yesterday.

It is hoped that work on the development, which is being supported by Advantage West Midlands, will begin early next year.

Although details of jobs have not yet been specified, it is predicted that 190 new vacancies will be created both in the warehouses and on-site offices.

Councillor Malcolm Gwinnett, chairman of the planning committee, said: "This is a big deal for the area, especially with the economic conditions the way they are.  This could be a very big boost. It is good news."

He said the development, also set to include 111 car parking spaces as well as cycle storage and shower units, would help to regenerate land which has become a magnet for fly-tippers.

Councillor Wendy Thompson said: "Anything which brings jobs to the city has to be a good thing."

The proposal from developers PxP West Midlands was originally put before the council in July but the developers were asked to address potential flood risks identified by the Environment Agency.

Councillor Gwinnett added: "The criteria have been met."
